How to Tell if Silver Is Real: 6 At-Home Tests
Six ways to check whether silver is real — from the hallmark and the magnet test to the ice test and a silver acid test — ranked by how much you can trust each one.
Whether it is an inherited flatware set, a flea-market bar, or a coin you are not sure about, the question is the same: is this real silver or a convincing fake? You can answer it at home in a few minutes. Here are six tests, ordered from fastest to most definitive, with an honest note on how far each one can be trusted.
Quick answer: The most reliable at-home checks are the hallmark, the magnet test, and a silver acid test. The ice test, ping test, and weight check are strong confirmations. Only a silver acid test or a professional XRF scan gives certainty — everything else can rule silver out or make it likely, but not prove it.
1. Read the hallmark
The fastest test is the stamp. Genuine solid silver is almost always marked with its fineness:
- “925” or “STERLING” — sterling silver, 92.5% pure.
- “999” / “.999” — fine silver (bars, rounds).
- “800”, “830”, “835” — continental European silver.
- “EPNS”, “EP”, “silver on copper”, “A1” — silver plate. Effectively no melt value.
No mark at all usually points to plate, especially on American pieces, since US law has required sterling to be marked for over a century. The hallmark is the first thing a buyer reads, so it is where you should start too.
2. The magnet test
Silver is not magnetic. Hold a strong magnet to the item: real silver produces no pull, and a magnet slides off a tilted silver surface. If the piece is clearly attracted, it is not solid silver.
The catch: a non-magnetic result does not prove silver, because copper, brass, nickel, and aluminum are all non-magnetic too. The magnet rules out steel-and-iron fakes instantly, but it cannot tell silver from other white metals on its own.

Look for: A strong rare-earth magnet or a telescoping magnetic pickup. Ceramic fridge magnets are too weak to trust.
3. The ice test
Silver has the highest thermal conductivity of any metal, and you can feel it. Place an ice cube on the item and another on a non-silver surface: on solid silver, the ice starts melting almost immediately as heat rushes into it. It is a quick, chemical-free confirmation that fakes rarely pass.
4. The ping (ring) test
Real silver rings. Balance the coin or piece on a fingertip and tap it with another coin: solid silver gives a long, high, bell-like ring that sustains for a second or more. Plated base metal produces a short, dull thud. Coin dealers use this constantly to sort junk silver by ear.
5. The weight and size check
Silver items made to a standard — coins, bars, rounds — hit a known weight. A US pre-1965 quarter contains a specific mass of silver; a one-ounce round should weigh very close to 31.1 grams. A fake is usually lighter (base metals are less dense than silver) or the wrong dimensions for its stated weight. A precise scale turns “feels about right” into a real check.
6. The acid test — the definitive one
When you need certainty, a silver acid test settles it. A drop of the graded acid on a tiny filed spot reacts by color to confirm silver and its rough purity. Filing through any plating is what makes it conclusive where surface tests fail — the acid sees the metal underneath.

No single quick test is proof. The confident approach is to stack them — a piece that is marked 925, ignores a magnet, passes the ice test, and rings true is almost certainly silver — and to reach for the acid kit whenever real money is on the line.

No. Silver is not magnetic. A strong magnet held to genuine silver feels no pull and slides off. If an item is clearly attracted to a magnet, it is not solid silver — though a non-magnetic result alone does not prove silver, since copper, brass, and aluminum are also non-magnetic.
